Founded in 1907, Essanay Studios produced silent films by many of the greatest stars of its day, including Charlie Chaplin and Gloria Swanson. Essanay also produced America’s first cinematic depictions of “Sherlock Holmes” and “A Christmas Carol” and some of the world’s earliest animated cartoons. Most famously, Essanay produced Charlie Chaplin’s classic film “The Tramp” in 1915.

The Acme was a model of chain-driven touring cars made from 1903 to 1911. Chain-driven, you say? Yes. James C. Reber acquired the Acme Machine Company’s bicycle factory at a receivership auction, and used the factory to manufacture automobiles. The price was quite high for the time, $3,000-$5,000, which included, rather optimistically, a “perpetual guarantee”.

Opened in 1972 in South Barrington, Penny Road Pub was an off-the-beaten-path dive/biker bar open until 3am, serving surprisingly above-average bar food and cheap, free-flowing beer and mixed drinks. They hosted live bands every weekend for local bikers, rockers and headbangers, and was known for their more than slightly aggressive bouncers…so, so divey.

Opened in 1987 in Chicago, Lounge Ax was an important live indie music venue hosting acts such as Liz Phair, The Replacements, Smashing Pumpkins, Poi Dog Pondering, Urge Overkill and Wilco (whose frontman Jeff Tweedy married the co-owner in 1995). The interior of Lounge Ax was one long continuous space with a crazy little stage in the back, a leaky ceiling, and a seating area with a legless couch, a smattering of tables, purple walls, Christmas lights and Elvis paraphernalia…as indie as it gets.

Opened in 1994 in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago, Double Door was an iconic live music venue housed in a former liquor store. This was a place where the smell of stale cigarettes and sweat mingled in the dimly-lit bar. Pin Pan Alley was a chain of video arcades operating in the Midwest from the late 70s until early 90s. These arcades were Mecca to kids trying to get their initials on the leaderboard in Dragon’s Lair, Defender, Galaga or Tank Battle. Max’s Kansas City was a nightclub in NYC that had little to do with Max and even less to do with Kansas City. A rival to neighboring CBGB, it was where punk mingled freely with glitter-rock and glam; a magnet for artists, actors, musicians, poets, and fame moochers. A trip to Max’s Kansas City meant being served by Debbie Harry (your waitress for the night ) and sharing the visible air with the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, William S. Burroughs, Andy Warhol and Lou Reed, among many others.

The club also served as a setting for several films including Goodfellas, Raging Bull, and Tootsie. And, oh yes…there’s that Barry Manilow song the club inspired.

Opened in 1958, Record Mart was a little record store inside the Times Square subway station (literally underground; you had to pay subway fare to get down to the shop on the subway platform). It was the oldest record store in Manhattan still in operation, and sold DVDs, headphones, cameras and a wide selection of new and used LPs, especially Cuban Jazz, Boogaloo, and Merengue.

Danceteria nightclub opened its doors in 1979 in NYC with a genre-hopping roster of bands, artists, DJs, video installations and events. Opened in 1949, Empire Drive-In was a classic 830-car drive-in movie theatre located in Webster, New York. It had a playground right in front of the giant screen and the Empire name emblazoned in neon on the back, and when they were closed for the season, the marquee would read, “Closed for the season. Opened in 1927, the Roxy Theatre was a huge movie palace just off Times Square in NYC. Known as the “Cathedral of the Motion Picture”, the Roxy’s design featured a soaring golden, Spanish-inspired auditorium. Opened in 1971 in Brooklyn, the Crazy Eddie consumer electronics chain rose to prominence for its prices, but more so for its pitchman, an unholy mashup of Pee-wee Herman and Donald Trump, who would squeeze as many words as humanly possible into his allotted thirty seconds, waving his arms and screaming about amazing deals on VCRs, televisions or electric fans. Lucky Strike, a shabby-chic bistro in NYC, served French-ish comfort food to SoHo locals for 31 years. There was no more lived-in dining room in NYC than here: the patina on the menu-adorned mirrors was very real and the wood and leather accents had all seen better days. Electric Circus was the East Village psychedelic fever dream of Andy Warhol, replete with fire-eaters, mimes, clowns, trapeze artists, strobe lights, make-out nooks, and the house band, The Velvet Underground (yes, them!). Warhol dubbed the experience "The Exploding Inevitable" — a dazzling synthesis of psychedelica and glamour with Warhol’s performance displays of lights, projections, costumes, and (it goes without saying)...illegal substances. Billy Berg was a nightlife impresario in the 40s and 50s. The Berg brand meant music and dancing and drinking, a hip crowd and hipper bands. Berg owned at least six different clubs in the Los Angeles area, and his flagship was Billy Berg’s in the heart of Hollywood. It was one of the first nightclubs to disregard the color barrier onstage and at the tables, and he booked big jazz musicians including Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.

Few LA clubs had a greater influence on alternative music than Scream. While the rest of the Sunset Strip catered to the growing hair metal genre, Scream embraced the rejects of rock music and solidified itself as an essential part of the emerging alternative scene. A sprawling dive, The Satellite was the leading LA shrine to all things indie for over 25 years. Parking there was a combat sport, but the venue had good sound and an upstairs lounge with a less-crowded bar and a photo booth (that actually worked on good nights). The Satellite hosted major acts like Lady Gaga, Beck, the White Stripes and the Foo Fighters, and the Monday night program, which featured free monthly residencies for buzzy local bands on their way up, was always worth a look.

Gazzarri's Hollywood-A-Go-Go was a nightclub on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. The Doors and Van Halen were house bands there before being discovered, and it was a staple of the Los Angeles music scene for decades. Some other bands who played Gazzarri's included Guns N' Roses, Quiet Riot, Mötley Crüe, Poison, The Go-Go’s, Cinderella and Ratt. Many hand-painted pictures of these bands adorned the side of the club’s outside wall for many years.

The Mabuhay Gardens was a premier venue for punk rock in San Francisco during the 80s. Rock promoter and television producer Dirk Dirksen brought in many early punk and new wave bands, like Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Butthole Surfers, Patti Smith, The Damned, Devo, Iggy Pop, The Ramones, Hüsker Dü and The Cramps. As emcee, Dirksen deliberately baited and traded insults with audience and band members, and was a central part of the atmosphere of the Mabuhay.

Opened in 1950 in College Park, a suburb of Atlanta, the Roosevelt Drive-In had a 500-car-capacity and featured a very impressive art deco marquee. It frequently showed sci-fi and horror movies during the 50s and 60s, as well as a generous helping of lighter family fare. Martin Theatres was owned by Carmike Cinemas, which in its heyday was the fourth largest movie theater chain in the United States. The original Martin Theatre featured “Ultra-vision” with a 42-foot-wide curved screen and projectors directed toward it at slight angles, and “Air-Flo Rocking Chair Reclining Seats”…pretty swanky indeed.

Opened in 2004 in downtown Columbus, the (Locos Amigos) Cantina was your basic dive Mexican joint — dark, a little dingy, and serving the “best Margarita” and having the “largest tequila bar” in Columbus. The Top Hat Cafe in Columbus was a local favorite for over half a century, long before hot chicken was nationally famous. Dubbed the “Holy Grail of Fried Chicken”, their super spicy fried chicken served between two slices of white bread was greasy deliciousness. Since 2003, The Jinx packed ‘em in for rock, metal, alt, country and hip hop shows. This fun and funky venue was home to all things musical, six nights a week. Sitting at Edgewood’s far end was the Music Room, a basement venue with a thick-fog vibe playing deep house, techno and electronic music by elite DJs and artists from around the world. A glowing boom-box facade was only the beginning. Inside was a dark, sweaty underground bunker with pulsing DJ sets pushing the boundaries all night long; you would walk down those stairs into a completely different world. It played a major part in the underground music scene in Atlanta.

Opened in 1971 in River Grove, IL, the hard rock club Thirsty Whale brought in national acts such as Blue Öyster Cult, Molly Hatchet, Foghat, and Cheap Trick.
